This is pretty incredible. I don’t really talked about it much but I am a former military instructor. It was the best job I ever had. I love teaching. I’m also quite good at it.
The “tactical” training field is currently (and has been since soon after 9/11) flooded with fly-by-night, unqualified, inexperienced, and dangerous “instructors.” In most cases, it takes a couple of days and a couple hudred bucks to pick up an “instructor’s” certificate from an organization (including the NRA) and voila! You too can open your own training center.
Most of those I’ve encountered have zero experience in the subject matter and have never received any legitimate training or education on the actual process of teaching. It shows. Dramatically.
I have attended intense training courses, both in the military and in the civilian world, provided by firearms and tactics experts, SWAT officers, Green Berets, Navy SEALs, world class precision shooters, Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and federal agents. Not once, NOT ONCE, did any of them create, either intentionally or unintentionally, an unsafe situation for their students.
You will only see that when you are attending a course being offered and operated by personnel who have no business teaching anything related to firearms and tactics.
“But, but, we train hardcore! Train the way you fight! Big boy rules!”
YEAH, about that. Do Marines, Commandos, and FBI HRT fight in such a manner that there is a serious, and apparently, intentional danger of them shooting their own people? Do they train in such irresponsible ways?
A great part of real training is learning about muzzle discipline, trigger discipline, how to safely maneuver as a team, avoiding crossfire, and knowing where your bullets are going before you squeeze that trigger. If you can’t, or won’t, learn that aspect of the violent arts, you have no business learning the rest.
There is a reason the military carries and trains with an unloaded rifle for weeks before they put a round in a magazine or in a chamber. Crawl, walk, run. Next task, start over.
I wrote off Tactical Response years ago after watching some YouTube videos of their live fire training exercises. I wrote off many others as well. Pick your teachers wisely. Your life, and the lives of your loved ones, actually does depend on it.
